Advanced Life Support (ALS)

The American Red Cross Advanced Life Support (ALS) course is designed to train healthcare professionals, including nurses, physicians, EMS professionals, and other healthcare and public safety personnel to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults.

The American Red Cross programs are guided by the latest evidence-based science from the Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council and are aligned with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Consensus on Science with Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR), the Red Cross Healthcare Guidelines and current research from the global scientific community.

This program reflects updated 2025 science guidelines. The American Red Cross ALS course is designed for professional healthcare clinicians who directly care for adult patients in a variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings and who could be called on to care for a critically ill patient. This could include, but is not limited to:

  • Medical personnel, such as dentists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, physician assistants, respiratory therapists and students entering these fields.
  • Emergency Medical Services personnel such as paramedics and students entering these fields.
  • Paramedical professionals who may be called on in an emergency and individuals who work closely with medically complex patients.
*Blended means that an online component must be completed prior to the course. After registration the online session is sent.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

The American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) program is designed to train responders including nurses, physicians, EMS professionals, and other healthcare and public safety personnel to respond to cardiac and other life-threatening emergencies in adults, children and infants. The American Red Cross programs are guided by the latest evidence-based science from the Red Cross Scientific Advisory Council and are aligned with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) Consensus on Science with Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR), the Red Cross Healthcare Guidelines and current research from the global scientific community. This program reflects updated 2025 science guidelines.

The American Red Cross BLS course is designed for responders and professional healthcare clinicians who directly care for patients in a variety of settings and who could be called on to care for a critically ill patient. This could include, but is not limited to:

  • Medical personnel, such as dentists, nurses, nurse assistants, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physical therapists, physicians, physician assistants and students entering these fields.
  • Public safety personnel and other professional responders, such as advanced emergency medical technicians (AEMTs), emergency medical responders (EMRs), emergency medical technicians (EMTs), firefighters, law enforcement, paramedics and students entering these fields.
  • Paramedical professionals who may be called on in an emergency such as medical office staff, medical transporters and individuals who work closely with medically complex patients.

Basic Life Support (BLS) and First Aid

The American Red Cross Basic Life Support with First Aid course is designed to train healthcare professionals including nurses, physicians, EMS professionals, and other healthcare and public safety personnel to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants. Content in this program is consistent with:

  • The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) 2020 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science with Treatment Recommendations.
  • The American Red Cross Focused Updates and Guidelines 2020. First Aid teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illnesses, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies.Students who successfully complete this course will receive certifications for Basic Life Support and First Aid that are valid for 2 years.

Oxygen Administration Classes

Administering Emergency Oxygen

The purpose of the American Red Cross Administering Emergency Oxygen course is to give participants the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to a victim of a breathing emergency using breathing devices, including resuscitation masks, bag-valve-mask resuscitators (BVMs) and emergency oxygen.
