The purpose of this American Red Cross course is to provide an alternative to mandated lifeguard staff accompanying campers to trips where swimming or aquatic activities will be present at already guarded facilities. This four (4) hour course provides training to trip leaders which includes portions of the American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue, Waterfront Lifeguarding, and Lifeguard Management curriculum, as well as the video “Aquatic Safety at Children’s Camps-Not just bells, horns and Whistles”.
Taught by certified Lifeguarding Instructors this engaging course covers areas such as:
- Responsibilities of leaders and camp counselors
- Safe swimming
- Safety Orientations for staff and campers
- Classification of swimmers abilities
- Buddy checks
- Assisting lifeguards in observing of swimmers (pool deck coverage)
- Scanning and Patron surveillance of your group
- Emergency Action Steps at your camp or pool and Emergency Action Plans
- Recognizing an Emergency and Deciding to Act
- In and out of water assists
- How to recognize and help in an emergency
- Records and Reports
Prerequisites:
- Minimum age: 18 years old.
- Pool Activity Leader Candidates must demonstrate throughout the course that they are mature and responsible.
